Abstrak

Background: Endotracheal intubation is a crucial step in airway management in patients undergoing general anesthesia to maintain ventilation and oxygenation during surgical procedures. One factor influencing successful intubation is the patient's head and neck position. The sniffing position is known to improve glottic visualization by aligning the oral, pharyngeal, and laryngeal axes, thus facilitating ETT insertion. Objective: This study aims to determine the effect of sniffing position on the success of intubation in odontectomy patients under general anesthesia at the Central Surgical Installation of Dr. Tjitrowardojo Purworejo Regional Hospital. Method: This study used a quasi-experimental design with a Posttest-Only with Control Group Design approach. A sample of 50 respondents was obtained using a total sampling technique, consisting of 25 respondents in the intervention group and 25 respondents in the control group. The intervention group was given the sniffing position before intubation, while the control group used the standard hospital position. Data were collected using an intubation success observation sheet and analyzed using the Chi-Square test. Result: Intubation success in intervention group was 64.0% (16 respondents), while the control group was only 36.0% (9 respondents). Chi-Square test showed a p-value of 0.048 (p<0.05) with an Odds Ratio (OR) of 3.16, which means patients who received the sniffing position had a 3.16 times greater chance of successful intubation compared to the control group. Conclution: There is significant influence of sniffing position on success of intubation, with a positive relationship, namely the application of the sniffing position increases the success of intubation compared to the standard position in odontectomy patients with general anesthesia at the IBS RSUD dr. Tjitrowardojo Purworejo.
