Abstrak

Background: Patients in the intensive care unit who experience decreased consciousness will experience difficulties in fulfilling basic needs independently, one of which is the need for physical mobility. The impact of this disruption can increase the risk of other troubles such as on blood flow or pressure ulcers. Passive Range of Motion (PROM) is a nursing intervention that can be used to meet the physical mobility needs of these patients. Objective: The objective of this study was to analyse the effect of PROM on changes in the vital signs of patients with decreased consciousness. Methods: A quasi-experimental method was used with a one-group pre-test post-test approach on 23 samples who experienced decreased consciousness and had stable haemodynamics. The instruments used were a PROM checklist and vital sign observations. The study was conducted by measuring the patients' vital signs before PROM and then measuring again after intervention, then comparing results. Results: The data were analysed statistically using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank-test due to the abnormal distribution of vital sign data. The results of the pre-test and post-test statistical analysis produced a p-value of 0.014 (p<0.05) with an effect size of -0.873. Conclusion: This study concluded that there was a significant effect of PROM on changes in the vital signs of patients with decreased consciousness in the ICU. The results of this study can be considered in making PROM a routine nursing intervention for patients with decreased consciousness.
