Abstrak

The growth of urban communities and the fragmentation of religious authority driven by the expansion of digital spaces have created the need for new approaches to da’wah management. However, existing studies on religious moderation and da'wah management have generally examined these issues separately, resulting in the absence of a conceptual model that explains how religious moderation is internalized within urban communities. This study aims to analyze the management practices of the Special Da’wah Committee (Komite Dakwah Khusus [KDK]) of the Indonesian Council of Ulama (Majelis Ulama Indonesia [MUI]) of South Sulawesi in internalizing religious moderation among urban communities in Makassar. The study employed a qualitative approach using an instrumental case study design. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and document analysis involving 18 informants, including KDK administrators, da’i (Islamic preachers), community leaders, and KDK congregation members. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis through iterative processes of data reduction, coding, categorization, and theme development. The findings reveal that the internalization of religious moderation is achieved not merely through the transmission of formal religious doctrines but through da’wah governance that is relational, participatory, and adaptive to the dynamics of urban society. The study proposes the Urban Moderative Da’wah Management conceptual model, which comprises four interrelated dimensions: urban socio-religious mapping, community-based relational engagement, the framing of religious moderation narratives in digital spaces, and the negotiation of religious authority within pluralistic societies. The novelty of this study lies in the development of a da'wah management model that reconceptualizes moderate da'wah as a form of relational religious governance, thereby enriching the scholarship on da'wah management, religious moderation, and urban Islamic studies.
